MARENGO - Rachel Tess Helfers, 94, of Marengo, died Tuesday, Jan. 11, 2011, in Marengo.

She was born Dec. 2, 1916, in Macon, Mo., to Henry and Rachel (Isbeque) Sulhoff. She graduated from Macon High School in 1933. She became a registered nurse in 1939 after completing three years of nurse's training at Lutheran Hospital in St. Louis.

She was a member of First Baptist Church of Marengo, the Marengo Sewing Club, and the Marengo Senior Citizen's Club. She also served as a volunteer at St. Joseph's Hospital in Belvidere for many years. She loved to make and repair clothing for herself as well as her family and friends. She also couldn't wait to plant her garden so that she could share her tomatoes and other vegetables with her loved ones.
More than anything, she loved reading her Bible and attending Bible classes, watching Billy Graham on TV, and going to church. She was a kind and generous person whose words and actions showed us how good people should act.
She is survived by three sons, Victor H. (Diane) Schmitt Jr. of Port Orange, Fla., Thomas W. (Jessica) Schmitt of Marengo and Jeffrey D. Schmitt of Dubuque, Iowa; her daughter, Barbara R. (Timothy) Keniski of Glendale, Ariz.; her stepdaughter, Cindy (Roger) Kueking of Marengo; 13 grandchildren, Gavin T. Schmitt, Darren L. Schmitt, Tyler J. Schmitt, David Schmitt, Lora Schmitt, Robert Kruse, Katherine Kruse, Milissa Keniski, Marianne Keniski, Kathryn Whitney, Monica Diedrich, David Kueking and Natalie Wiley; her brother, Eldren Sulhoff of Crestwood, Mo.; three sisters, Marie Sulhoff of St. Louis, Lorene Tenting of Belleville and Reba Midkiff of St. Louis; nine great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The family would like to thank special friends Lorraine Johnson, Marcella Spears, Peggy Paulelli and Kenneth Ackmann in Indian Trails. Their kindness will not be forgotten.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Victor Schmitt on Feb. 12, 2009; and her second husband, Henry Helfers on June 6, 1984.

The visitation will be from 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 15, until the service at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 320 E. Washington, Marengo. Interment will be private.
